Hurricanes Pose Major Risk to Wind Energy Industry
The researchers examined storm risks to wind turbines in four areas where offshore wind energy projects are being proposed: Texas, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. They found that the risks transform considerably based on location, with the greatest hurricane risks to turbines off the Texas and North Carolina coasts, since those areas are more susceptible to primary hurricanes of Category 3 intensity or greater.
